What ‘4.9%’ really means
A rate headline is a starting point for questions. It is not automatically a complete description of what a person will receive.
Start with the label
First, check whether the number is APY, APR, simple interest, promotional yield, or a sample scenario. APY usually includes compounding, while APR language is more common in borrowing contexts.
Look for the conditions
A 4.9% headline may depend on balance size, new-customer status, direct deposit, a limited term, or a product category. The useful question is not “is this high?” but “what must be true for this number to apply?”
Check if it can change
Many cash rates are variable. That means the number you see today may not be the number available later. A calm reader treats the headline as temporary until the official terms say otherwise.
